1. I think City Council needs to invite community discussion on how our community could be designed to cope with a less abundant future. YES We need more public forums on this question and other relevant questions. Council needs to work at discovering the people’s priorities.
2. I believe City Council should provide transport alternatives for those who don't own a car such as pensioners, students and low-income families. YES The possibility has been discussed at least twice by council. As the city grows, it will become more necessary. At some point it will be needed.
3. I believe sound urban development should include ensuring equal solar access to residential sites and building walkable, connected neighborhoods. YES Prior to the implementation of such a policy, consultation with developers in necessary.
4. I believe the City should provide incentives to individuals and developers who intend to use energy conserving technology.
YES
I think this is a provincial responsibility.
5. I believe the City should purchase land to increase public green space.
YES
Public green space needs to be a part of every development. There is currently a long term plan for the development of a park southwest of the Southland Church.
6. I think that local government has a role in the protection of native flora and fauna. YES The park southwest of the Southland Church should keep natural vegetation as much as possible.
7. I support a role for council in discouraging the use of plastic bags.
YES
Steinbach City Council should lobby the province to implement a province-wide policy discouraging the use of plastic bags.
8. I believe that government should challenge its citizens' ideas or habits regarding the environment.
YES
I think Government needs to lead in this area. It is happening already and will escalate in the next few years
9. I believe the use of chemicals for cosmetic lawn and garden purposes contributes to human health problems.
YES
But more research is needed.
10. I believe the use of chemicals to control mosquitoes has a negative effect on other pollinators and human health.
YES
But more research is needed.
11. In recent years large corporations have taken over the grocery and stationery markets. Since large corporations have resulted in growing stress on local businesses, I believe City Council needs to take steps to stop this trend.
YES
This is a concern of mine, but cannot conceive an effective City policy that could reverse this trend.
